A COASTAL SENSE

OF PLACE

As a city open to the North Sea, Dunkirk has originally developed around its industrial and commercial port. Focusing recenlty on touristic growth, the city has reinvented a new landscape by focusing on the importance of its coastline. The beach of Malo-les-Bains is a good illustration of such move, and of the interdependent relationships existing between the processes of urbanization and "touristification". This symbolizes the emergence of a new form of urbanity, inducing a change in the outlook on the city of Dunkirk, originally associated with a certain form of austerity.
